The 3 Must-Have Books for Your EI Arsenal

Recommendations by Judy Lee

Marketing for your success includes having the right resources to guide your client in the ‘what is emotional intelligence (EI)’ stage of the game. While you can speak about EI, it helps to have some solid reading in their hands to drive the importance and understanding of EI.

The three must-have books that I recommend include the following:

1) The EQ Edge
by Dr. Steven Stein

Updated in 2006, with real-life anecdotes of EI factors interacting at work, home and in social situations, this book defines EI, demonstrates new evidence of its importance, provides useful steps to improve your Emotional Quotient, and enables you to begin the process of change at your own pace.

This is a great ‘starter’ book for your client to learn about what EI is, and what it is not. I would recommend that you work through the exercises and case studies to draw attention to the real value of EI in the workplace.

2) Developing Emotional and Social Intelligence: Exercises for Leaders, Individuals and Teams
by Marcia Hughes and Amy Miller

Written for leaders, teams, organizations, and other skilled professionals responsible for helping people achieve their best. Developing Emotional and Social Intelligence: Exercises for Leaders, Individuals, and Teams offers practical exercises you can use for building emotional and social intelligence in your clients and your organizations.

Built around the most widely-used assessments, the thirty-six experiential exercises help develop effective individual emotional intelligence skills relating to the five factors measured by the Emotional Intelligence Skills Assessment (EISA) and the seven team emotional and social competencies measured by the Team Emotional and Social Intelligence Survey® (TESI®). Other popular assessments are discussed as well. Many of the exercises can be easily modified to meet a wide range of developmental needs.

3) The Stress Effect: Why Smart Leaders make Dumb Decision-And What to Do About It
by Henry (Dick) L. Thompson, Ph.D.

This book integrates powerful concepts that are shaping the future of leadership and business, such as stress, decision making, emotional intelligence, cognitive ability, and brain science. EI and leadership expert Dr. Thompson explores the underlying effects of stress on decision making and what leaders can do to improve their decision-making effectiveness- especially when stressed.

I would pick up this book because Dick has knowledge about leadership like no other. The topic of this book is so popular that webcasts have been based on this book. In 2010, Dick presented on ‘The Stress Effect’ as hosted by Human Capital Institute (HCI). Post-webcast surveys have shown that the value of the content will be, and it can be applied to diverse workplaces. Hence, this latest addition to the EI literature is really a must-read for all leaders.
