First Faculty Development Day Well Received at Laurier
December 27, 2007Teaching Support Services, in collaboration with Learning Services and Human Resources at Wilfrid Laurier University, hosted a day-long event to discuss the impact of Emotional Intelligence on teaching and learning. The event was held on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 on the Waterloo campus in the Bricker Academic Building. Several well-known speakers in the field of Emotional Intelligence served as guest lecturers, including Dr. Steven Stein, author of The EQ Edge; Dr. James Parker, Canada Research Chair in Emotion and Health; and Dr. Catherine Andersen, Interim Dean of Enrollment Management and General Studies at Gallaudet University, Washington, DC. More than 120 faculty, staff and students representing eight institutions from across western Ontario participated.
The event provided a framework for educators to begin infusing EI strategies into curriculum and programming. “Many of our faculty and staff have since shared how much the event made them reflect and think about how EI can be incorporated into their own practice” reported Jeanette McDonald, Manager: Educational Development at Laurier. Teaching Support Services is setting up an EI advisory group to continue exploring how EI can support Laurier faculty, staff and students. The day enabled educators from various departments to explore the role of social and emotional competency in achieving student, program and institutional outcomes.
For the full agenda as well as links to PowerPoint presentations shared during the forum, please feel free to visit the Wilfrid Laurier site. If you wish to consider an EI faculty development initiative on your campus, feel free to contact Jon Duffy at jon.duffy@mhs.com.
